Barbara Postema is a Lecturer in English for Academic Purposes at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Arts, affiliated with the English Language and Culture department. She holds a PhD from Michigan State University (2010) and specializes in comics studies, narrative theory, and visual narration. Her research explores wordless comics, AI collaboration in comics creation, and transcultural graphic narratives. She serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics, co-editor of the 'Crossing Lines' book series (Wilfrid Laurier UP), and holds editorial roles in multiple academic journals. Recent work includes analyzing AI's role in synthetic comics and examining the impact of ChatGPT on humanities scholarship. Postema is actively involved in academic societies like the Comics Studies Society and the Canadian Society for the Study of Comics.
Her research spans topics like graphic novel history, experimental visual forms, and the cultural significance of comics festivals. She has published widely in Image and Narrative, International Journal of Comic Art, and Palgrave Studies in Comics. Current projects focus on non-verbal narratives and digital humanities applications in comics.
