Barbara Mennel is Professor of English at University of Florida with joint appointments in Film Studies and German Studies. She held the Waldo W. Neikirk Professorship (2014-2021) and University of Florida Research Foundation Professorship (2018-2021). Mennel earned her Ph.D. in German Studies with specialization in film and visual culture.
Research focuses include feminist film theory, European cinema, queer representation, and urban film studies. Recent publications examine transnational German cinema, women's work in 21st-century European film, and feminist film practice methodologies. Current projects explore cinematic miniatures and coastal environmental representations.
Honors include Laura Shannon Prize Honorable Mention (2022) and Freiburg Institute Best Publication Prize (2022) for Women at Work in Twenty-First Century European Cinema. Fellowships include Paul Mellon Fellowship at National Gallery of Art (2013) and Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship (2016-17).
Mennel co-directed interdisciplinary projects including 'Coasts, Climates, the Humanities, and the Environment Consortium' and 'Global Cities and Cinema' initiative. She served as Director of UF Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere (2017-2023).
