Barbara Lonnquist is Professor of English and Chair of the English Department at Chestnut Hill College. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and teaches a broad range of courses in British and Irish literature, literary theory, film adaptations, and interdisciplinary topics such as gender, ethnicity, travel writing, and ecology in literature.
Her research focuses on modernist authors, particularly James Joyce and Virginia Woolf, with additional interests in postcolonial and contemporary British and Irish literature. She explores themes of narrative structure, translation, cultural identity, and human-animal relationships in literary texts. Her work often bridges literary analysis with philosophical, ecological, and feminist perspectives.
The 15 most recent publications and presentations reflect a sustained engagement with modernist studies, especially Joyce and Woolf, while also expanding into travel writing, postcolonial urban literature (e.g., Zadie Smith), and intersections of language, identity, and translation. Her scholarship appears in conference proceedings and edited volumes, with recurring themes of memory, displacement, and narrative innovation.
Selected Scholarly Contributions:
- "Working with Clay" on collaborative aspects of Joyce’s Dubliners
- "Homeless in Nature" on Woolf and ecocriticism
- "Civilizing the National Discourse" on John Henry Newman’s educational philosophy
- "Improper Bodies" on disability in Mrs. Dalloway
- "Re-Mapping the Metropolis" comparing Woolf and Zadie Smith
