Barbara Hanson is a Professor in the Department of Sociology at York University, affiliated with the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, an M.A. from Carleton University, a B.A. from Western University, and an LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School. She is a member of the Bar of Ontario. Her research focuses on theory, methods, meta-theory, epistemology, health, intimate relations, law, fat studies, religion, and gender.

Professor Hanson has held visiting appointments at Princeton Department of Sociology, Institute for Research on Women at Rutgers, University of California San Francisco, Mental Research Institute (Palo Alto, CA), and the University of San Francisco. She served as Editor-in-Chief of the International Review of Modern Sociology and the International Journal of Sociology of the Family.
Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to societal structures and human behavior, particularly in health, gender, and legal contexts. She received the 1999 Faculty of Graduate Studies Teaching Award for excellence in graduate education. She is currently accepting new graduate students.
