Prof. Barbara Fruth is a Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior (Konstanz) and former Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology at Liverpool John Moores University. She leads the Department for the Ecology of Animal Societies and serves as IMPRS Faculty/Spokesperson. Her research focuses on bonobo socio-ecology, conservation, and medicinal plant use in central African rainforests.
Education:
- Habilitation (2013), LMU Munich: "Challenging traditional concepts: Bonobo behavior and habitat conservation via plant use"
- PhD (1995), LMU & Max Planck Society: "Nests and Nest Groups in Wild Bonobos"
- Diplom (1990), LMU: "Nests, Nutcracking Sites, and Chimpanzee Density in Ivory Coast"
Research Interests: Bonobo social behavior, female dominance dynamics, medicinal plant exploitation, and conservation strategies involving local communities. Integrates herbaria, phytochemical analyses, and habitat protection.
Articles Trends: Recent work emphasizes microbiome dynamics, tool use, self-medication, and cross-species comparisons. Highlights ecological and health implications of human activities on bonobos and their ecosystems.
Awards:
- Therese-von-Bayern Preis (1997) for foundational Lomako bonobo research
Advising/Grants: Supervises long-term LuiKotale Bonobo Project (since 2001), collaborates with Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp, and secures funding from MPG and international bodies. Funds environmental education programs and sustainable resource use.
Labs/Teams: Leads multi-institutional projects integrating primatology, ecology, and conservation biology. Maintains field stations in Congo's Salonga National Park.
