Dr. Barbara Dritschel is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Psychology and Neuroscience, University of St Andrews. She holds a Ph.D. from the European Cognitive Society. Her research focuses on cognitive processing in emotional disorders, memory processes influenced by neurological impairments, and the impact of depression and trauma on autobiographical memory retrieval. Current projects examine depression's effects on social problem-solving, trauma's influence on memory retrieval in diverse populations, and memory-related problem-solving abilities in closed-head injury patients.
Dr. Dritschel has supervised PhD candidates including Effie Assan, Jiaqi Chen, and others. She has contributed to over 60 research outputs, including studies on mindfulness interventions, autobiographical memory specificity, and cognitive vulnerability. Her work intersects with the UN Sustainable Development Goals related to mental health and well-being. Projects include collaborations on dementia support technologies and randomized controlled trials on meditation efficacy.
Key contributions include exploring self-compassion's role in memory retrieval and investigating the relationship between awareness of age-related changes and mental health in older adults. She has received grants from the British Academy, Economic & Social Research Council, and others. Dr. Dritschel is affiliated with the Institute of Behavioural and Neural Sciences and serves as an editor for PLoS ONE.
