Barbara Canlon is Professor of Hearing Physiology at Karolinska Institutet, Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, with additional affiliations including Visiting Professor at Kyoto University Medical School (2008). She serves as President for both the Center for Communication Disorders (2005-present) and National Center for Communication Disorders (2005-present).
Her research focuses on auditory neurobiology, specifically characterizing molecular mechanisms underlying hearing loss and identifying innovative protective strategies. Key areas include microscopic studies of cochlear hair cells and neurons, regenerative/damaging agents for hair cells, and stress physiology epidemiology related to hearing impairment. She investigates both long-term and short-term stress impacts on auditory function.
Dr. Canlon has delivered over 35 plenary talks internationally, including at ISAAR Denmark (2011), CRS Amplifon Germany (2011), and the 50-year anniversary of Kresege Hearing Institute at University of Michigan (2010). Her work bridges clinical applications and fundamental research in otolaryngology.
- Alvarengas Prize (1990) for discovering Sound Induced Outer Hair Cell Motility
- C. A. Tegnér Prize for Ocular Transplants of the Inner Ear (1992)
- Elected Vice-President for Swedish Acoustical Society (1998-present)
- Elected into CORLAS (2006) and 13-Club (2007)
- Fulbright Commission Board Member (2010)
- Editor-in-Chief for Hearing Research (2010)
She has secured major funding including European Commission Concerted Action grants (1995, 2000) as Task Organizer, served as Principal Investigator for the Research School on Communication Disorders (2009-2014), and consulted for NIH (1994), AstraZeneca (2010 workplace hearing studies), and United States Marines (2011). Her leadership extends to the International Committee Research in Otolaryngology (1998) and consortiums for Hearing Disabilities (2009).
