Barbara Braams is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Behavioural and Movement Sciences, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, specializing in Clinical, Neuro- & Developmental Psychology. She holds additional appointments at the IBBA and LEARN! (Educational Neuroscience, Learning and Development). Her research focuses on adolescent neurocognitive development, particularly risk-taking behavior and social influence. She obtained her PhD in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience from Leiden University (2015).
Key research interests include neuroimaging studies of decision-making processes, the impact of peer dynamics on adolescent behavior, and translating findings into real-world applications. She has supervised one PhD thesis and led projects like GUTS (Growing Up Together in Society) and Bridging the Gap. Awards include the NWO Science Communication Initiative Award (2023) and the J.C. Ruigrok Award (2019).
Braams is actively involved in science communication, including her book Het Riskante Brein and the Hoe?Zo! Show. She advises on societal initiatives like Social Debt and serves on boards such as the FLUX Society for Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience.
