Barbara B. Lockee

Barbara B. Lockee is a tenured full Professor of instructional design and technology in the School of Education at Virginia Tech. She currently serves as the Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, a newly created role as of August 2022. In this position, she develops and supervises initiatives to help faculty thrive throughout their careers, focusing on building a sense of community among faculty, improving professional development opportunities, and helping faculty seek external recognition for their work.

Dr. Lockee has been with Virginia Tech since earning her Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction in 1996. Her educational background includes a Master's degree in curriculum and instruction (1991) and a Bachelor's degree in communication arts (1986), both from Appalachian State University.

Dr. Lockee's research focuses on instructional design, educational technology, and distance learning. Her scholarship has made her a leader in her field, with dozens of peer-reviewed publications and more than $14 million in funding from federal agencies including the National Science Foundation, USDA, and USAID. During the pandemic, her work on emergency remote teaching became highly influential, with her co-authored paper for Educause Review becoming one of the most cited articles on remote education.

Throughout her career at Virginia Tech, Dr. Lockee has demonstrated commitment to faculty development and scholarly excellence, first as a professor since 1996 (associate professor in 2001, full professor in 2007), then as associate director for educational research and outreach, and most recently as the first faculty fellow in the Office of Faculty Affairs (2018) before her current appointment as Associate Vice Provost.
