Jean-Marie Baland is a Professor of Economics at the University of Namur (FUNDP), Belgium, and holds a distinguished academic career spanning over three decades. He has held visiting positions at Harvard University, Boston University, and institutions in Kenya, France, and Norway. His primary affiliation is with the Department of Economics at FUNDP, where he has served as Professor since 2003, following roles as Associate Professor (1999–2003) and Assistant Professor (1992–1999). Baland’s research focuses on Development Economics, Environmental Economics, and Political Economy, with notable contributions to resource management, credit markets, and institutional design in developing economies.
His academic leadership includes roles as an associate editor for journals such as the Review of Development Economics and Journal of Development Economics. He is a core member of the THRED network and a Research Fellow at the CEPR.
