Prof. Dr. Babette Renneberg is a distinguished Professor of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy at the Department of Education and Psychology, Freie Universität Berlin. She currently serves as Dean of the Department of Education and Psychology and previously held the position of President of the European Society for the Study of Personality Disorders (ESSPD) from 2020 to 2022. Her academic leadership extends to directing the university outpatient clinic for psychotherapy, diagnostics, and health promotion since 2009 and leading the training program for child and adolescent psychotherapy since 2012.
Prof. Renneberg earned her Diplom (Dipl.-Psych.) at Philipps-Universität Marburg in 1986, followed by her doctoral degree (Dr. rer. nat.) from the same institution in 1991. She achieved her Habilitation with Venia Legendi in Psychology from Universität Heidelberg in 2002, establishing her academic credentials for professorial positions. Her career includes significant appointments at Goethe-Universität Frankfurt and extensive research experience at Heidelberg University.
Her research focuses on cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety and personality disorders, particularly borderline personality disorder. She investigates psychosocial factors in physical illnesses and conducts foundational and therapeutic research on personality disorders. Her work emphasizes clinical-psychological intervention research (process and outcome), social cognition and interaction, emotional regulation and cognitive control, and prevention, health promotion, and resources. She has developed specialized training programs for mothers with borderline personality disorder and conducts extensive research in the university outpatient clinic.
Prof. Renneberg's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on digital mental health interventions, particularly smartphone-based applications for postpartum depression (Smart-e-Moms project). She continues extensive research on personality disorders, especially borderline personality disorder, with emphasis on parenting challenges and mentalizing capacities. Her work increasingly incorporates transdiagnostic approaches to emotional disorders and explores therapeutic alliance across different treatment modalities. She also contributes significantly to the implementation of ICD-11 diagnostic criteria for personality disorders and leads large-scale naturalistic studies on cognitive behavioral therapy effectiveness.

As head of the training program for child and adolescent psychotherapy at ZGFU since 2012 and leader of the university outpatient clinic for psychotherapy, diagnostics, and health promotion since 2009, Prof. Renneberg has supervised numerous students and early-career professionals. She currently leads multiple third-party funded projects including the G-BA-funded 'Smart-e-Moms' smartphone intervention for postpartum depression, the BMBF project 'ProChild' evaluating a parenting skills training for mothers with borderline personality disorder, the I-REACH project on transdiagnostic psychotherapy for Arabic-speaking refugees, and the DFG-funded PANDA project on social anxiety disorder treatment and neural activity changes.
Prof. Renneberg leads the Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy department at Freie Universität Berlin, which includes a team of researchers and clinicians focused on personality disorders, anxiety disorders, and digital mental health interventions. Her team operates the university outpatient clinic where they conduct research on depression and social anxiety disorders. She also coordinates the I-REACH consortium for refugee mental health care and collaborates with multiple international research groups on personality disorder research through her past presidency of ESSPD.
