B.S. Sathyaprakash is the Elsbach Professor of Physics and Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Pennsylvania State University. His research focuses on gravitational physics and cosmology, particularly gravitational wave astronomy, black hole dynamics, and general relativity. He holds a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from the Indian Institute of Science (1987), an M.Sc. in Physics from IIT Madras (1981), and a B.Sc. from Bangalore University (1979).
Key contributions include foundational work on gravitational wave detection, including the first observations of binary black hole mergers with the LIGO Scientific Collaboration. His research spans theoretical modeling, data analysis techniques, and cosmological implications of gravitational wave events. He has developed methods for testing general relativity using black hole ringdown signals and contributed to template-based search algorithms for gravitational wave detectors.
His work has been pivotal in advancing understanding of compact binary systems and their role in astrophysical phenomena. He collaborates extensively with global initiatives like LIGO and has authored over 200 publications, focusing on gravitational wave observations, parameter estimation, and the interface between theory and experimental data.
