Azniv Kirkor Kasparian is a Professor in the Department of Algebra at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Sofia University. She holds a PhD from the University of Utah (1993) and has been with the university since 1989, progressing from Assistant to her current position as Professor since 2012. Her office is located in room FMI-529, and she can be reached at +359 2 8161 710.
Her educational background includes an MSc in Mathematics from the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics at Sofia University 'Kliment Ohridski' (1984) followed by a PhD from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City (1993). Her academic career at Sofia University has been continuous, starting as an Assistant (1989-1995), then Senior Assistant (1995-1997), Chief Assistant (1997-2001), Associate Professor (2001-2012), and finally Professor (2012-present).
Professor Kasparian's primary research focus is in Algebraic Geometry, with significant contributions to Hodge Theory, Ball Quotients, and Coding Theory. Her work bridges pure mathematics with applications in coding theory, exploring connections between algebraic structures and geometric properties. She has developed expertise in variations of Hodge structure, modular forms, and the geometry of ball quotients, often examining their arithmetic properties and connections to finite fields.
Her publication record shows consistent output over three decades, with recent work focusing on the intersection of algebraic geometry with coding theory. The trends in her research demonstrate a progression from foundational work in Hodge theory and Calabi-Yau manifolds to more recent applications in coding theory, particularly examining MacWilliams identities, tangent codes, and Duursma's reduced polynomial through the lens of algebraic geometry.
Professor Kasparian has supervised at least two Master's students to completion: Lyubinka Nikolova (2010) who worked on 'Factors of the ball, covered by abelian surfaces' and Pancho Beshkov (2015) who researched 'Non-associative operations on variations of Hodge structure'. Her teaching responsibilities include core algebra courses such as Algebra I, Algebra II, Linear Algebra, and Higher Algebra, as well as specialized electives including Commutative Algebra, Cryptography, Coding Theory, Galois Theory, Group Theory, and Introduction to Number Theory.
