Ayshwarya Subramanian

Ayshwarya Subramanian is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Cornell University (College of Arts and Sciences). She is also affiliated with the Department of Computational Biology and holds memberships at the Englander Institute for Precision Medicine (EIPM) and The Jill Roberts Institute for Research in Inflammatory Bowel Disease at Weill-Cornell Medicine, NYC. Her research focuses on decoding cellular and systems-level heterogeneity in health and disease, leveraging computational methods and high-throughput molecular data to advance precision medicine.

Subramanian completed her PhD in Carnegie Mellon University under Russell Schwartz, developing computational tools for tumor heterogeneity analysis. Her postdoctoral training at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Broad Institute furthered her expertise in systems immunology. Key research themes include immune cell state dynamics (e.g., microglia, T cells), single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, and translational applications in neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Alzheimer’s), kidney disorders, and cancer.

Her work integrates computational modeling with experimental validation, addressing questions like: How do cellular states evolve in disease? What are the functional implications of immune checkpoint regulators like TIM-3 or TREM2? How can spatial transcriptomics reveal organ-specific pathologies?

Subramanian collaborates across disciplines, contributing to initiatives like the ImmGen consortium and leading projects on SARS-CoV-2 cellular targets. She holds graduate field memberships in Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, and Computational Biology at Cornell.
