Ayalew Osena is an Associate Professor and Co-Director of the Plant and Pollinator Center in the Department of Biology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He holds a Ph.D. from Okayama University, M.Sc. from University of Hanover, and B.A. from Alemaya University of Agriculture.
His research focuses on improving underutilized/orphan crops like tef and cassava for enhanced nutrition, health benefits, and climate resilience using molecular-genetic tools and biotechnology. Additional investigations explore plant interactions with environmental contaminants and antioxidant properties of grain extracts.
Recent publications demonstrate strong focus on crop genomics, CRISPR technology applications, and environmental toxicology. Article analysis reveals consistent themes in sustainable agriculture, genetic improvement, and stress physiology.
He maintains an active research group advising multiple graduate students and teaches courses including Plant Physiology and Biotechnology, Cell Biology, Global Change, and Environmental Health Science.
