Axel Brandes is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Regional Health Research at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Southern Denmark, affiliated with the Research Unit of Cardiology at IRS - Esbjerg and Grindsted Hospital, University Hospital of Southern Denmark. He has played a central role in medical education and cardiovascular research for decades, with a strong focus on atrial fibrillation, arrhythmias, ECG interpretation, and anticoagulation therapy.
His research expertise lies in atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and cardiac monitoring technologies. He is actively involved in major clinical studies such as the LOOP trial and has contributed to understanding circadian patterns in arrhythmias, AI applications in ECG reporting, and psychological aspects of chronic cardiac conditions. His work frequently appears in top-tier journals including Nature Medicine, European Heart Journal, and European Journal of Heart Failure.
Over the past two decades, his research has emphasized screening strategies, disease progression, and patient outcomes, particularly in atrial fibrillation. He has also contributed to digital health interventions aimed at improving mental health in cardiac patients, reflecting a holistic approach to cardiovascular care.
He serves as an Associate Editor for the journal Cardiology and has participated in numerous peer reviews, conference presentations, and PhD defense committees. He was involved in endorsing the 2024 ESC Guidelines on atrial fibrillation, highlighting his influence in shaping clinical practice.
Axel Brandes has extensive experience in medical education across undergraduate, postgraduate, and interdisciplinary levels. He has lectured on syncope, tachycardias, resuscitation, and evidence-based medicine, and has served as an examiner in OSCEs. He previously led the 'Heart-lung-vessels' module in the Biomedicine master’s program and has been responsible for arrhythmia education in medical curricula since 2012. He has also trained nurses and registrars and contributed to educational course development for Holter monitoring and emergency cardiology.
He is an active member of the Danish Society of Cardiology and contributes regularly to its educational initiatives, including the Atrial Fibrillation Course. His interdisciplinary outreach includes lectures for dieticians and anaesthesiology nurses, demonstrating a commitment to team-based patient care.
