Dr. Axel Barlow is a Lecturer in the School of Environmental and Natural Sciences at Bangor University, where he teaches modules in bioscience, molecular ecology, evolution, and herpetology. He leads an active research group focused on evolutionary and conservation genomics, utilizing ancient DNA (palaeogenomics) and modern genomic techniques.
Dr. Barlow’s research interests center on two major themes: evolutionary genomics of mammals, particularly extinct species like cave bears, mammoths, and big cats using palaeogenomics; and conservation genomics of native UK species such as adders, hedgehogs, and lizards. His work integrates molecular ecology, phylogenetics, and bioinformatics to understand evolutionary history and inform conservation strategies.
His recent publications show a strong trend in applying advanced genomic methods to diverse taxa—from ancient megafauna to modern reptiles and mammals—using both fossil and contemporary samples. The research spans disciplines including molecular biology, ecology, and evolutionary genetics, often with implications for biodiversity conservation and species management.
Dr. Barlow is actively involved in postgraduate supervision and offers PhD/MRes projects in palaeogenomics and conservation genomics. He also runs an annual Bioinformatics Bootcamp for postgraduate researchers.
He has published extensively in high-impact journals such as Nature Ecology and Evolution, Science, Current Biology, and Molecular Biology and Evolution, demonstrating a consistent and influential research output.
