Dr. Avinash Gupta is a Specialized Teaching Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and Director of the Human eXtended Reality Interaction (HXRI) Lab. He also serves as a Faculty Affiliate at the Jump Simulation Center, CI-MED, and teaches software and hardware engineering courses in the Masters in Health Technology program.

His research centers on human extended reality interaction (HXRI) in healthcare, focusing on user-centered XR design, cognitive and behavioral aspects of XR, and applications in medical education, neonatal training, and aging. He leads investigations into AI/ML integration with XR technologies and collaborates on cyber-physical systems.
Dr. Gupta is a Co-Principal Investigator on a multi-university NIH grant for the CREATE Center (aging and technology) and Principal Investigator for two internal Jump Arches–UIUC grants exploring VR/AI for nurse education and MR for neonatal training. His work appears in journals like IEEE Systems and IJCARS and is presented at conferences including IEEE VR and SMC.
Labs & Teams: As Director of the HXRI Lab, he leads projects such as the AR-based Endotracheal Intubation Simulator and VR-based Electrocardiogram Training Simulator, collaborating with lab members like Emre Eraslan, Vihaan, and Helen.
