Avin Vijay is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Aeronautics & Astronautics at the University of Washington, Seattle. He leads the Group for Mechanics, Materials and Manufacturing of Structures (G3MS), focusing on structural mechanics and numerical tools for design for manufacturing (DfM) and additive manufacturing (DfAM) of composite and 3D-printed materials in aerospace systems. His research spans structural optimization, in-space manufacturing, and deployable space structures.
- Ph.D., Aerospace Engineering, University of Michigan (2021)
- M.S., Aerospace Engineering, University of Michigan (2014)
- M.S., Civil & Environmental Engineering, University of Michigan (2014)
- B.Tech, Civil Engineering, National Institute of Technology Karnataka (2012)
His work addresses challenges in integrating material properties and manufacturing constraints for aerospace applications, including deployable structures and in-space assembly. He has received awards for research excellence and outreach, such as the ASME/Boeing Best Paper Award and the Michigan Aerospace Outreach Champion Award.
Previously, he served as an Assistant Research Scientist (2023–2024) and Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2021–2023) at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
