Aurie Hsu is an Assistant Professor of Computer Music and Digital Arts at Oberlin Conservatory, part of Oberlin College. She holds a Ph.D. in Composition and Computer Technologies from the University of Virginia, and degrees in piano performance and electronic music from Oberlin Conservatory (BM) and Mills College (MFA/MFA).
Her research focuses on kinesonic composition, blending movement and sound through systems like the RAKS (Remote electroAcoustic Kinesthetic Sensing) interface, developed with Steven Kemper. This wireless sensor system integrates belly dance movements with live electroacoustic music and robotic instruments, showcased in works like Shadows no. 5 (2010, ICMA Award-winning).
Hsu’s creative output spans interactive electroacoustic music, prepared piano performances, and collaborations with dance companies such as De Novo Dance. Notable works include shut.eye (2016), an immersive performance exploring sleep cycles, and Why Should Our Bodies End at the Skin? (2018), a robotic percussion collaboration.
Her academic contributions include publications in Leonardo Music Journal and conferences like ICMC and TEI. Teaching roles include positions at the University of San Diego and Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts.
