Augustine Thompson is a Professor of History at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology, currently on extended leave to serve as Director (Praeses) of the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies at the University of Toronto. His work focuses on medieval religious culture, particularly in Italy.
- Education: Master of Sacred Theology (Dominican Order), PhD (University of California, Berkeley), BA in Philosophy and MDiv (Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology), BA and MA (The Johns Hopkins University)
His research explores Medieval Christianity, Religious History of Medieval Italy, and Popular Religious Movements. He has also contributed to studies on Medieval Theology, Canon Law, and Mendicant Orders, emphasizing the lived experiences of laypeople and religious communities.
Thompson is a member of several scholarly societies, including the American Catholic Historical Society, American Historical Association, and the Medieval Academy of America. Outside academia, he enjoys detective novels, model railroading, hiking, and the music of Gilbert & Sullivan.
