Atsuko Hashimoto is a Professor and Graduate Program Director in the Department of Geography and Tourism Studies at Brock University. She holds a PhD in Tourism Management from the University of Surrey, UK, an MSc in Tourism Development from the University of Surrey, and a BA in Psychology from the University of British Columbia, Canada. Her research focuses on socio-cultural dimensions of tourism, including sustainable tourism in rural areas, human rights issues, indigenous tourism in Japan, and dark tourism. She has conducted extensive work on heritage tourism, anime tourism, and the political ecology of tourism.
Dr. Hashimoto’s recent research projects include studies on anime tourism in Japan, political ecology of tourism, Ainu indigenous tourism, and hidden Christian heritage tourism. She has published widely in peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of Tourism and Cultural Change, Journal of Heritage Tourism, and Japan Forum. Her teaching includes courses on tourism policy, human rights in development, culinary tourism, and sustainable rural tourism.
Her advising and grants include supervising and examining graduate students in tourism studies, particularly focusing on cultural, ethical, and sustainable aspects. She has collaborated on projects addressing community participation in tourism, disaster response, and rural revitalization. Dr. Hashimoto’s work often integrates qualitative methods, including fieldwork, interviews, and content analysis, to explore tourism’s socio-cultural impacts.
