Athulya Aravind is an Associate Professor of Linguistics and Cognitive Science at Yale University, directing the Child Language Development Lab. Previously, she held faculty positions at MIT (Department of Linguistics & Philosophy) and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University's Department of Psychology. She earned her PhD in Linguistics from MIT.
Her research focuses on language acquisition mechanisms, particularly how children develop adult-like linguistic competence, and syntactic/semantic representation in adults. Methodologically, her work combines experimental approaches with theoretical linguistics frameworks. She has taught courses ranging from undergraduate language acquisition to advanced syntax and semantics at Yale and MIT.
Key research areas include child language development patterns, presupposition processing, quantifier interpretation, and formal syntactic analysis of South Asian languages like Malayalam. Her lab employs behavioral experiments to study developmental milestones in syntax, semantics, and pragmatics.
She serves as an Associate Editor for Language Acquisition and Linguistics and Philosophy. Her work bridges experimental findings with formal linguistic theory, contributing to understanding both child language development and adult linguistic competence.
