Athanasios Papistas

Athanasios Papistas is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His office is located in the STHE Building on the 2nd floor, with office hours on Monday from 12:30-14:00 and Tuesday from 14:00-15:00. His educational background includes a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Manchester (UMIST), England, in 1987, with a doctoral thesis titled Automorphism groups of nilpotent groups and Lie algebras under the supervision of Prof. Roger M. Bryant. He also holds a degree in Mathematics from the University of Ioannina (1983).

Professor Papistas' research focuses on Group Theory and Lie Algebras, with specific interests in the combinatorial theory of (zero-power) groups, automorphisms of relatively free groups, and relatively free Lie algebras. His work represents a significant contribution to the theoretical foundations of algebraic structures.

His publication record spans two decades, with his most recent work published in 2015. His research demonstrates a consistent focus on automorphism groups across various algebraic structures, particularly examining metabelian, nilpotent, and torsion-free groups alongside their corresponding Lie algebra representations. The mathematical community has recognized his work through publications in prestigious journals including the Journal of the London Mathematical Society, Journal of Algebra, Glasgow Mathematical Journal, Communications in Algebra, and Quarterly Journal of Mathematics.

Throughout his career, Professor Papistas has held visiting positions at the University of Manchester, the Institute of Mathematics of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, and the Department of Mathematics and Informatics of the University of Sofia. Prior to his current position at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, he served as a Lecturer at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Ioannina.
