Astrid Schomäcker

Dr. Astrid Schomäcker is a Postdoctoral Researcher and Project Coordinator at the University of Bayreuth's Institute of Philosophy, where she leads research in the Explainable Intelligent Systems (EIS) project. Her work investigates how explainability in AI systems contributes to societal goals like responsible decision-making and trustworthiness.

Research examines:

• Relationships between explainability and algorithmic fairness
• Conceptual foundations of 'understanding' in AI systems
• Philosophical frameworks for opaque algorithms

She holds a PhD from Humboldt University Berlin where she developed novel approaches to the Hard Problem of Consciousness through conceptual change theory.
