Astrid Dempfle

Prof. Dr. Astrid Dempfle serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Medical Statistics / Biometrics at the Institute for Medical Informatics and Statistics, Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel. She holds a professorship in Statistical Genetics, serves on the board of the Clinical Trials Center Kiel, and is principal investigator of the INF-project. Her work bridges statistical methodology with clinical applications across multiple medical specialties.

Her research focuses on the intersection of genetics and medical statistics with primary interests in:

• Genetic Epidemiology - investigating the genetic basis of complex diseases
• Statistical methods for clinical trials - developing robust analytical approaches
• Gut-brain axis research - exploring connections between gastrointestinal and neurological systems

Prof. Dempfle's publication record demonstrates significant contributions to Parkinson's disease genetics research, statistical methodology for gene-environment interaction studies, and clinical research on eating disorders. Her work shows strong interdisciplinary collaboration across neurological, psychiatric, and cardiovascular domains, with particular emphasis on methodological rigor in genetic association studies.

She leads the INF research group (Dempfle / Ellinghaus) which focuses on data management, bioinformatics and statistics across multiple research phases. Her collaborative network includes the Research Center Borstel – Leibnitz Lung Center, HMGU Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology, UKSH, and Universität zu Lübeck, with primary funding from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG – German Research Foundation).
