Aslaug Kristiansen is a professor of education at the University of Agder (UiA), with a doctorate from the University of Oslo (2003). She has been employed at UiA since 1989, after her first temporary position at what was then Kristiansand Teacher Training College. Her academic background includes a Cand. Paed. degree and research assistant work at the Norwegian Teachers' Academy in Bergen. She has studied Martin Buber's philosophy at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem and the Pädagogisches Institut der Universität Freiburg with Professor Maurice Friedman.
