Ashutosh Varshney is the Sol Goldman Professor of International Studies and Social Sciences and Professor of Political Science at Brown University, directing the Center for Contemporary South Asia. He previously taught at Harvard University (1989–98) and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (2001–2008). His research focuses on ethnicity, nationalism, political economy, and South Asian politics. Notable books include Ethnic Conflict and Civic Life: Hindus and Muslims in India (2002) and Battles Half Won: India’s Improbable Democracy (2013).
Awarded the Guggenheim and Carnegie fellowships, Varshney has advised the UN, World Bank, and UNDP. Current projects include urbanization in India and multi-country studies on cities and ethnic conflict. He contributes to Foreign Affairs and is a Indian Express columnist.
