Ashutosh Singh, PhD, P.Eng., is an Associate Professor and Area Head of Biological and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Guelph's School of Engineering. He holds a B.Tech. in Biotechnology from Vellore Institute of Technology (2007), and M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Bioresource Engineering from McGill University (2010, 2014). Before joining Guelph, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Dalhousie University and a Research Associate at McGill University.
His research focuses on food engineering, including novel processing methods, food safety testing (e.g., ATR-FTIR and NIR techniques), and biosensor development for allergens/toxins. He also explores nanotechnology applications in food systems, biotechnology integration, and environmental sustainability. His lab, Food Engineering Research Lab, addresses global food security challenges through interdisciplinary approaches.
Dr. Singh teaches undergraduate courses in Biological Engineering Systems, Heat and Mass Transfer, and graduate courses in Advanced Food Engineering and Food/Bio-process Engineering. His work spans over 50 publications and includes projects on nanoparticle synthesis, food waste valorization, and climate-food system modeling.
His team includes PhD students (e.g., Rahul Barbhuiya), M.A.Sc. students (e.g., Abrar Alzaydi), and postdoctoral fellows (e.g., Saipriya Ramalingam). Current projects involve magnetic nanoparticle applications, green synthesis of nanoparticles, and LED bioreactor systems for nutraceutical production.
