Ashraful Alam

Dr Ashraful Alam is the Assistant Dean, Diversity and Inclusion and Senior Lecturer in Social Planning at the Melbourne School of Design, University of Melbourne. Previously, he directed the Master of Planning Programme at the University of Otago. His research focuses on urban studies, social and cultural dynamics, and marginalized communities' impact on urban spaces, particularly in migration-driven contexts. Collaborations span institutions like Toronto Metropolitan University and NGOs in Bangladesh, addressing climate-displaced populations and informal city-making processes.

His current project "Beyond the Metropolis" examines migrant settlement in non-urban areas across Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, funded by Canada's Social Science and Humanities Research Council. He leads the Informal Urbanism Research Hub (InFur-), emphasizing participatory methods to empower marginalized voices in urban research.
