Arvind Tiwari serves as a Research Fellow and PhD student at the Global Centre for Clean Air Research (GCARE) within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Surrey's School of Sustainability. With over ten years of professional experience, he holds a postgraduate degree in Environmental Engineering and Management from IIT Delhi and an undergraduate Civil Engineering degree from MITS Gwalior. His expertise spans air pollution modeling, green infrastructure planning, and air quality monitoring systems.
Education:
- Master of Technology (Environmental Engineering and Management), Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (2011)
- Bachelor of Engineering (Civil Engineering), Madhav Institute of Technology & Science, Gwalior (2009)
- Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching, University of Surrey (2020)
- Graduate Diploma in Nuclear Science & Engineering, BHABHA ATOMIC RESEARCH CENTRE (2012)
Tiwari's research integrates computational modeling with field measurements to address urban environmental challenges. His primary focus areas include developing frameworks for green infrastructure impact assessment, characterizing indoor air quality in educational and transportation settings, and optimizing low-cost sensor networks for real-time pollution monitoring. His work bridges environmental engineering with public health applications, particularly regarding respiratory infection transmission dynamics in confined spaces.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong thematic concentration on urban air quality solutions during the pandemic era. His research consistently examines the interplay between built environments, human exposure, and mitigation strategies - from classroom ventilation effectiveness to train carriage airflow dynamics and in-car pollution exposure. This body of work demonstrates sophisticated integration of dispersion modeling, field measurements, and health risk assessment.
Scientific Awards:
- Santander Universities Researcher Mobility Award (2018)
- FEPS PGR Student of the Year Award (2020)
Tiwari actively contributes to major research initiatives including the EPSRC-funded CO-TRACE project assessing airborne transmission in schools, the RealAir citizen science air quality monitoring project, and the European iSCAPE project for smart air pollution control. His collaborative work involves multiple institutions including Cambridge University and Imperial College London, with practical applications for urban planning and public health policy development.
As a core member of GCARE, Tiwari works within a multidisciplinary team developing innovative tools like the HedgeDATE decision support system and the Envilution chamber for sensor validation. His current PhD research under Professor Prashant Kumar focuses on modeling green infrastructure interventions for air pollutant and urban heat island mitigation at urban scales.
