Dr. Arvind Iyengar is a Lecturer in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at the University of New England (UNE). His academic journey spans Engineering (B.E. Mechanical, University of Pune) and transitioned to Linguistics through UNE's Master of Applied Linguistics and PhD programs. He specializes in grapholinguistics, sociolinguistics, phonetics, and phonology, with a focus on South Asian languages like Sindhi and the Hebbar Iyengar variety of Tamil.
Dr. Iyengar's research explores writing systems, language documentation, and minority language maintenance. Notable work includes a monograph on Sindhi writing systems and community efforts to preserve Hebbar Tamil through pedagogical materials. He coordinates courses such as LING381 'Writing Systems of the World' and teaches modules on phonetics, syntax, and sociolinguistics.
His recent publications (2020–2025) address decolonial language epistemologies, minority language revitalization, and writing system typology. He supervises research in orthography analysis, literacy practices, and Dravidian/Indo-Aryan language documentation.
