معرفی
Arthur L. Horwich is a Sterling Professor of Genetics and Pediatrics at the Yale School of Medicine and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator since 1990. His groundbreaking research on chaperonins, particularly HSP60 and its bacterial homologue GroEL, has revolutionized understanding of protein folding mechanisms in mitochondria and cellular compartments. He has held academic positions at Yale since 1984 and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the National Academy of Medicine.
Education:
- A.B. in Biomedical Sciences, Brown University (1972)
- M.D., Brown University (1975)
- Internship/Residency in Pediatrics, Yale University
- Postdoctoral Fellow, Salk Institute for Biological Studies (1978-1981)
Research Interests: Arthur L. Horwich's work focuses on chaperonin-mediated protein folding, mitochondrial protein import pathways, and the structural-functional analysis of HSP60/GroEL complexes. His studies have elucidated how dynamic chaperonin assemblies assist protein folding under normal and stress conditions, bridging biochemistry, genetics, and cell biology.
Scientific Awards:
- Gairdner Foundation International Award (2004)
- Wiley Prize (2007)
- Rosenstiel Award (2008)
- Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize (2008)
- Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research (2011)
- Shaw Prize (2012)
- Albany Medical Center Prize (2016)
- Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences (2020)
- BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award (2023)
Advising & Collaborations: Horwich has mentored notable students like Tapan K. Chaudhuri. His collaborations with Franz-Ulrich Hartl have been pivotal in advancing chaperonin research. He has received continuous institutional support, including Howard Hughes Medical Institute funding since 1990.
Labs & Teams: Horwich leads a research lab at Yale School of Medicine, focusing on in vivo and in vitro analysis of HSP60 and GroEL chaperonins. His team has pioneered structural studies to decode the molecular mechanisms of protein folding, leveraging genetic screens and biochemical reconstitution.
