Arthur DeGaetano is a Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University's Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, part of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). He leads the Northeast Regional Climate Center (NRCC), which disseminates climate data to regional stakeholders. His research focuses on applied climatology, including climate impacts on agriculture, extreme weather analysis, and climate adaptation strategies. He holds a Ph.D. from Rutgers University (1989) and has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles. Key achievements include developing soil freezing models and drought forecasting tools. Awards include the 2018 ASHS Outstanding Extension Publication Award. He teaches courses on global warming and meteorology, emphasizing undergraduate education in atmospheric sciences.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Climatology and Horticulture, Rutgers University, 1989
Research Interests: Climate data quality, extreme precipitation trends, freeze risk modeling for agriculture, and climate services for decision-making. His work bridges academia and practical applications, such as improving building codes and agricultural practices through climate data.
Awards and Outreach:
- ASHS Outstanding Extension Publication Award (2018)
- Director of NRCC, a federal climate data hub
- Editor for the American Meteorological Society's Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology
Grants and Labs: Involved in projects like the Climate Explorer tool and the Climate Change Indicators for Agriculture. Collaborates with stakeholders on adaptation strategies for New York State's climate challenges.
