Arthur Beyder, M.D., Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Physiology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. He holds dual appointments as a Consultant in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology within the Department of Internal Medicine and in the Department of Physiology & Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Beyder's clinical and academic focus centers on functional gastrointestinal disorders, particularly irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional dyspepsia.
Dr. Beyder's research explores the molecular mechanisms underlying gastrointestinal function and disease, with a particular emphasis on ion channels as molecular transistors that electrically excite cells. His laboratory investigates three primary focus areas: molecular mechanisms of enterochromaffin (EC) cell operation (which produce the body's serotonin), smooth muscle cell mechanosensitivity, and sodium channel mechanosensitivity, particularly Nav1.5. His work has revealed that mutations in these ion channels are present in IBS patients and produce abnormal molecular function that leads to disease.
Analysis of Dr. Beyder's recent publications (2023-2025) reveals a strong research trajectory focused on mechanosensitive ion channels (particularly Piezo channels), gastrointestinal motility, circadian rhythms in gut function, and the molecular basis of functional GI disorders. His work bridges basic science with clinical applications, aiming to develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for common yet difficult-to-treat gastrointestinal conditions.
Dr. Beyder has received significant recognition for his research, including the Fundamental Mechanisms of Aging Award from the Robert and Arlene Kogod Center on Aging at Mayo Clinic (2023), a Research Scholar Award from the American Gastroenterological Association (2015-2018), and an Extramural Loan Repayment Award from the National Institutes of Health (2010-2012).
With over 80 publications and numerous grants, Dr. Beyder maintains an active research program that combines molecular techniques, electrophysiology, and translational approaches to understand gastrointestinal physiology and pathophysiology. His laboratory collaborates extensively with other researchers at Mayo Clinic, including the Enteric Neuroscience Program and the Center for Cell Signaling in Gastroenterology (C-SiG).
