Art Hughes is a Reader in Irish at Ulster University’s School of Arts & Humanities. His career spans decades of fieldwork in Gaelic-speaking regions, including roles as Lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast and Armagh (1995-98), and Visiting Professor at New York University (2009-2010). He chairs the McCracken Cultural Society and contributes to Irish-language media.
Research in Celtic linguistics and literature drives his work, focusing on pan-Gaelic dialects from Old Irish to modern variants. His Digital Linguistic Atlas of pan-Gaelic Dialects uses sound recordings to document verbs across Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man, analyzing synthetic vs. analytic paradigms and archaic survival.
