Armido Studer is a Full Professor (W3) of Organic Chemistry at Westfälische Wilhelms-University Münster, Germany, where he has served as Director of the Institute of Organic Chemistry since 2004. His academic career includes associate professorship at Philipps-University Marburg (2000-2004) and postdoctoral research at the University of Pittsburgh (1995-1996).
- Education: Habilitation (ETH Zürich, 1996-2000), PhD (ETH Zürich, 1991-1995), Chemistry Studies (ETH Zürich, 1987-1991)
Studer specializes in modern organic free radical chemistry, including:
- Persistent Radical Effect (PRE)
- Base Promoted Homolytic Aromatic Substitution (BHAS)
- Electron Catalysis
- Nitroxide-Mediated Radical Polymerization (NMP)
- Stereoselective Radical Aryl Migration Reactions
- Oxidative Carbene Catalysis
His research focuses on radical reactions, C-C/C-X bond formations, and radical-polar crossover mechanisms, with applications in organic synthesis and on-surface chemistry. His seminal work on electron catalysis and radical-mediated transformations has been widely recognized.
Scientific Awards:
- ERC Advanced Grant (2016)
- Pedler Award of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2019)
- Highly Cited Researcher (2017, 2019, 2020)
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2019)
- Elected member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (2020)
Studer has published over 365 peer-reviewed journals, co-edited the Encyclopedia of Radicals in Chemistry, Biology and Materials (2012), and delivered >370 lectures globally. He serves on editorial boards of Angewandte Chemie and Advanced Synthesis & Catalysis.
