Professor Armando Martino is a faculty member at the University of Southampton's School of Mathematics, where he serves as Director of Student Engagement for Mathematics. He chairs the Student Staff Liaison Committee (Maths) and acts as NSS champion. Martino joined Southampton in 2008 after working as a postdoctoral fellow under the Ramon y Cajal scheme in Barcelona.
Professor Martino's research focuses on Geometric Group Theory with particular emphasis on:
- Actions on Trees and Bass-Serre Theory
- Automorphisms of Free Groups
- Deformation Spaces
- Probabilistic Methods for Infinite Discrete Groups
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on the intersection of group theory, geometry, and topology. Martino has made significant contributions to understanding automorphisms of free groups, particularly through the lens of geometric structures and tree actions. His work often combines algebraic techniques with geometric intuition to solve complex problems in group theory.
Professor Martino currently teaches Galois Theory (MATH3086) and Linear Algebra 2 (MATH1049), and supervises several PhD students including Sara Jayne Luder, Harry Margaret John Iveson, and Luke Waite. He has served as principal investigator on research projects funded by the Leverhulme Trust and EPSRC, including work on "The Lipschitz metric and the conjugacy problem for free groups" and the "Minasyan EPSRC Workshop Recent Advances in Geometric Theory."
