Ariel Procaccia

Ariel Procaccia is the Alfred and Rebecca Lin Professor of Computer Science at Harvard University's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). He also holds a visiting researcher position at Meta's FAIR division. His affiliations include the Center for Research on Computation and Society, Harvard Data Science Initiative, Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation, Institute for Quantitative Social Science, and the Center of Mathematical Sciences and Applications.

Procaccia earned his PhD (summa cum laude) from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 2009, following a B.Sc. (magna cum laude) in Mathematics and Computer Science from the same institution in 2004. He joined Harvard after tenure at Carnegie Mellon University (2011–2020) and postdoctoral roles at Harvard SEAS and Microsoft Israel.

His research bridges AI, algorithms, economics, and society, with a focus on fair division, computational social choice, and practical tools like Spliddit (fair division solutions) and Panelot (citizens’ panel selection). Recent work addresses AI alignment, democratic innovation, and applications with organizations like Refugees.AI and the Sortition Foundation.

Procaccia’s honors include the 2024 SIGecom Mid-Career Award, AAAI Fellowship, and Guggenheim Fellowship. He has pioneered interdisciplinary projects such as Optimized Democracy, a course on mathematical governance frameworks, and Virtual Democracy, an ethical AI decision-making framework.

Professional activities include editorial roles at top journals (e.g., ACM Transactions on Economics and Computation) and leadership in conferences like EC and AAAI. His work emphasizes societal impact, with grants spanning algorithmic fairness, democratic innovation, and AI ethics.
