Ari Van Assche is a Professor in the Department of International Business at HEC Montréal. He holds positions such as Co-director of the International Institute of Economic Diplomacy and serves on editorial boards of journals including the Journal of International Business Policy and Transnational Corporations Review. His research focuses on international trade, global value chains, and international business policy, with a particular emphasis on China’s economy and industrial clusters.
Education: Licentiaat in Sinologie from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Leuven, Belgium) and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Hawaii at Mānoa (USA).
Research interests include global value chains, international trade policy, and the intersection of geopolitics with business strategy. He has published extensively on topics such as sustainable business practices in emerging markets, the Belt and Road Initiative, and the impact of public procurement policies.
Notable awards include the AIB Fellow distinction (2023) and Best Reviewer at the Journal of International Business Studies (2024). He advises numerous PhD and Master’s students and oversees projects addressing global supply chains, sustainability, and economic diplomacy.
Labs/Teams: Active in the International Institute of Economic Diplomacy and contributes to initiatives like the Chair in Asian and Indo-Pacific Studies at HEC Montréal.
