Ari Goldman is a Professor of Journalism at Columbia University, where he has taught introductory journalism for over two decades after a 20-year career as a reporter for The New York Times. He has authored over 1,000 articles for the Times and now leads student reporting trips to Israel, India, Jordan, Ireland, and Italy, emphasizing immersive urban storytelling in New York City's diverse landscape.
His research and teaching focus on journalism fundamentals, international reporting, and multimedia storytelling techniques. He trains students to observe the city "in a fresh way" through words, images, and sound, blending practical fieldwork with classroom instruction. His approach centers on developing observational skills and narrative craft for modern journalistic practice.
Professor Goldman has completed 20 introductory journalism classes at Columbia, with the 21st class photo pending addition to his office wall. His educational outreach extends to high school students in New York City, where he teaches reporting fundamentals in one of the world's most densely populated urban environments. His office features 29 books spanning religion, history, and travel literature, alongside memorabilia from his Times career including physical article clippings from the 1970s-1980s.
