Educational background:
- Ph.D. in Physiology, University of Kansas and Stowers Institute for Medical Research
- B.S. in Biology, University of Missouri
- B.S. in Chemistry, University of Missouri
Her research spans behavioral genetics, developmental biology, evolution, and neurobiology with emphasis on insect-plant interactions. Leading studies at the 36-acre John Rushin Prairie (established 2020 on campus), her group investigates how host plants influence insect behavior, feeding, and reproduction in native prairie ecosystems to decode genetic and ecological relationships.
Dr. Newton advises students seeking hands-on research experience in genetics, behavior, or ecology. Her laboratory operates from the John Rushin Prairie field site with office location in Agenstein 232D (4525 Downs Drive, Saint Joseph, MO 64507), contactable via anewton4@missouriwestern.edu or (816) 271-4383.
