April Armstrong

April Armstrong, MD, MSc, is a Professor and holds the C. McCollister Evarts, MD, Chair leading the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, where she also serves as Chief of the Division of Shoulder and Elbow. She is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (2016).

Education includes:

• BSc from University of Western Ontario (1988-1992)
• MD from University of Western Ontario (1992-1996)
• Residency at University of Western Ontario (1996-2001)
• MSc from University of Western Ontario (2001-2002)
• Clinical Fellowships at St. Joseph's Health Care London and Barnes-Jewish Hospital (2001-2003)

Her research bridges biomechanical failure analysis in shoulder replacements with healthcare systems innovation. Primary investigations examine glenoid component failures in arthroplasty, supported by NIH-funded work on virtual fracture simulation. Secondary research domains include quality metrics in orthopedic care and systems-based training protocols.

Publications demonstrate strong focus on shoulder/elbow reconstruction outcomes, surgical economics, and evidence-based treatment guidelines. Recent works analyze arthroplasty complications, cost-optimization in rotator cuff repairs, and fracture fixation technologies, reflecting multidisciplinary approaches across biomechanics, health economics, and clinical epidemiology.

Educational leadership includes developing systems-based curricula for residents, implementing team-based quality/safety training, and previously serving as Vice Chair for Quality. Currently co-investigator on NIH grant exploring bone healing mechanisms.
