Anyssa Neumann is a concert pianist, musicologist, and film scholar. Her PhD research focused on the role of music in the films of Ingmar Bergman, and she is currently developing this work into two books.
Her work explores the intersection of pre-existing music and narrative in Bergman’s cinema, emphasizing themes of vulnerability, emotional authenticity, and the existential challenges faced by artists. She investigates how music functions as a conduit for spiritual communion, ritualized humiliation, and societal critique in times of war and cultural instability.
Neumann’s project is supported by funding from the Swedish Research Council and Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, highlighting its interdisciplinary significance at the crossroads of film studies and musicology.
