Professor Anu Kantele is a faculty member in the Department of Medicine at the University of Helsinki, affiliated with the HUS Inflammation Center and Clinicum. She serves as a supervisor for the Doctoral Programmes in Clinical Research and Population Health. Her research focuses on infectious diseases, travel medicine, vaccine development, and public health, with particular emphasis on antimicrobial resistance, SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19, and global health equity.
Research interests include clinical microbiology, epidemiology of infectious pathogens, vaccine efficacy trials (e.g., RSV, influenza, and enteric vaccines), and the impact of travel on disease transmission. Her work addresses antibiotic resistance mechanisms, post-viral syndromes like Long COVID, and disparities in disease outcomes among linguistic minorities.
Recent publications highlight studies on carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales in Finland, maternal RSV vaccines, and the epidemiology of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in travelers. She has contributed to over 296 peer-reviewed publications, with active research in 2025 focusing on emerging pathogens and vaccine strategies.
Supervision includes doctoral candidates in clinical and population health research. Collaborations involve global health networks, including studies in Pakistan, Benin, and Burkina Faso, addressing antibiotic resistance and vaccine efficacy in resource-limited settings.
