Antwain K. Hunter

Antwain K. Hunter is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research focuses on the intersection of slavery, freedom, and racial dynamics in North America, with a particular emphasis on North Carolina. He is completing a book manuscript examining black North Carolinians' use of firearms as tools for subsistence, defense, and resistance in the colonial and antebellum eras. Additional research explores black engagement with vice economies (gambling, alcohol, sex work) in antebellum America.

Education includes a BA from Westfield State University (2007), MA from University of Connecticut (2009), and PhD from Pennsylvania State University (2015). He teaches courses such as HIST 376 (History of African Americans to 1863) and HIST 398 (North American Slavery). Current advisee includes Nicholas Sifford (co-advised with Kathleen DuVal). His work bridges legal history, social history, and material culture to contextualize present-day racial and legal issues.
