Antonis Giannopoulos is Professor and Personal Chair of Applied Geophysics and Computational Electrodynamics at University of Edinburgh's School of Engineering. With a D.Phil. from University of York (1997) and geology degree from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1991), he leads research in ground penetrating radar (GPR) modeling and applications. Giannopoulos directs development of gprMax, the open-source FDTD electromagnetic simulator widely used in GPR research.
His research advances computational electrodynamics methods for realistic GPR simulation, including antenna design, wave propagation modeling, and machine learning applications for automated data interpretation. Applications span landmine detection, infrastructure inspection, and planetary exploration radar systems. Current projects develop AI frameworks for interpreting GPR data from lunar and Martian missions.
Giannopoulos teaches Surveying for Construction and Infrastructure Sensing using GPR courses. Administrative roles include former Head of Civil and Environmental Engineering (2019-2022). As General Chair of the 9th International Workshop on Advanced Ground Penetrating Radar (2017), he fostered global research collaboration in geophysical sensing technologies.
