Antonio R. Moreira

Antonio R. Moreira is a Professor in the Department of Chemical, Biochemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). He also serves as Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, overseeing units such as the Library & Gallery, Center for Global Engagement, and the Hilltop Institute, while maintaining teaching and research responsibilities.

• Education: Post-doctoral in Biochemical Engineering (University of Waterloo, Canada), Ph.D. in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering (University of Pennsylvania), M.S. in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering (University of Pennsylvania), B.S. in Chemical Engineering (University of Porto, Portugal).

Dr. Moreira’s research focuses on bioprocess engineering, applying engineering principles to biological processes such as microbial fermentation, cell culture, and biodownstream processing. His work emphasizes integration of bioreactor systems, mass transfer optimization, and biopharmaceutical production. Recent publications explore high-throughput clone selection, process scouting devices, and synthetic biology applications.

He contributes to academic leadership by coordinating new program development, representing UMBC in international academic agreements, and chairing committees like the UMBC Diversity Council. As Director of UMBC’s Biochemical Regulatory Engineering program, he bridges engineering and pharmaceutical standards.
