Dr. Antonio Facciuolo is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Veterinary Microbiology at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan. He is also a Research Scientist & Principal Investigator at VIDO (Veterinary Infectious Disease Organization) since April 2022. His expertise focuses on Mycobacterium paratuberculosis infections in cattle (Johne’s disease), mucosal immunity mechanisms, and vaccine development.
Education:
- BSc and MSc in Biology, University of Waterloo (Waterloo, Ontario)
- PhD, University of Guelph (Guelph, Ontario), specializing in proteomic and immunological characterization of Mycobacterium paratuberculosis secreted proteins
Research Interests:
- Host-pathogen interactions between M. paratuberculosis and intestinal macrophages/dendritic cells
- Mechanisms of immune evasion by M. paratuberculosis and protective host responses
- Vaccine development strategies, including antigen discovery, delivery routes (enteric vs. parenteral), and immune correlates of protection
Key Contributions:
- Developed the 'gut loop' model in calves for studying mucosal immunity and vaccine efficacy
- Established intestinal segments as a novel vaccine screening platform for Johne’s disease
Publications & Labs:
Active in publishing via PubMed and ORCiD. Leads research at VIDO, focusing on enteric mycobacterial infections and translational vaccine solutions.
