António Afonso is a Full Professor at ISEG (Lisbon School of Economics and Management), part of the University of Lisbon. He has held this position since 2011 and coordinates the Master in Monetary and Financial Economics. His research focuses on macroeconomics, fiscal policy, and public finance, with a particular emphasis on sovereign risk, fiscal sustainability, and the interplay between monetary and fiscal policies.
Dr. Afonso has an extensive professional background, including roles as a Senior Economist at Caixa Geral de Depósitos and the Ministry of Finance, and has advised institutions such as the Banco Nacional Ultramarino. He has authored numerous books, including Handbook on Efficiency in the Public Sector and academic texts on monetary and public finance economics.
His research interests span fiscal sustainability dynamics, geopolitical impacts on sovereign risk, and the effects of monetary policy shocks. He has supervised over 40 students in master’s and PhD programs, focusing on topics like sovereign ratings, fiscal consolidation, and macroeconomic policy interactions. His work has been published in leading journals such as Economic Change and Restructuring, Journal of International Money and Finance, and Empirical Economics.
Key contributions include analyzing the role of fiscal rules, the impact of geopolitical risks on government debt portfolios, and the effects of unconventional monetary policies. He is actively involved in research labs at ISEG, including the Data Lab, Futures Lab, and Policy Lab, which address contemporary economic challenges.
